Beneath the Dust

As part of the Voices of Resistance legacy work, the communities team ran a performance project with young people from the Black, African and Caribbean diaspora. We wanted to balance the representation of challenging histories alongside stories of resistance, celebration and joy. Dance and music were a part of resistance and community in the Caribbean.

We worked with dance researcher and facilitator Dr. Tia-Monique Uzor, music producer Elliot Popeau-George and 5 young people (between the ages of 13 and 17) from The Apex Project to deliver a creative project which encapsulated the young peoples own stories and interest with themes from the exhibition.

We worked with the young people across 5 days, with stage presence workshops, writing sessions, and recording sessions. Their voices and ideas shaped the project. They performed the raps they wrote at the museum on the final day of the project.

The legacy is a music video filmed in the museum, by cinematographer Nick Hamer, which includes rap, dance and music.
