The Postal Museum to reopen on 29 October

Get ready for a first-class experience, as The Postal Museum, including Mail Rail, prepares to reopen and welcome visitors back, from Thursday 29 October 2020.  

Tickets go on sale today, Tuesday 6 October, and with visitor numbers reduced to ensure social distancing, pre-booking is now essential.  

We’re reopening with exciting programming, including a final chance to see the popular exhibition The Great Train Robbery: Crime and The Post and the continuation of our sell-out Tunnel Walks throughout November and December (tickets on sale 20 October). Families will be able to join in the Where’s Wally? Spooky Museum Search, organised by Walker Books and Kids in Museums until 30 November throughout the museum.

We are so thrilled to be able to open to the public again. We have really missed having visitors in the museum and we are very happy to be able to offer both a safe and interactive visit in these new times.  

The post has connected people during the pandemic and continues to play a vital role. We hope that you will enjoy finding out about the history of the postal service as it has adapted in its many hundreds of years of existence. 

We know that not everyone will be able to visit the museum in person. It has been a pleasure to see the new and engaging ways that people are experiencing and discovering our collections and we will continue to share stories of extraordinary communication from our archives and collections online. Join in on social media wherever you follow us, sign up to our newsletter and  explore our digital highlights with our growing collection of stories.

What’s changed? 

We’ve made some changes to the museum, with new safety measures in place to ensure an engaging, enjoyable, and safe visit for the whole family.  

We’ve adapted our technology to keep the museum as engaging as it was before closure, so you can continue to enjoy a hands-on, interactive experience. The Mail Rail ride has been adapted with new Perspex screens to keep households/bubbles separated safely and a new boarding and departure process is in place. In the galleries and exhibitions, some buttons have been replaced with sensors, audio points can be enjoyed on your own devices and you will be provided with eco-friendly styluses to operate touch screens on request, guaranteeing an absorbing, safe visit. 

We also have all the COVID-safe measures in place that you will be familiar with, including hand sanitiser throughout the museum, mandatory face coverings for visitors and staff and social distancing.  

The museum will be open Thursdays to Sundays and you can book up until 31 December 2020. We will be releasing future dates over the coming months, subject to Government guidelines.
