The Postal Museum, Discovery Room
Fancy getting up close and personal with the stuff of history? Want to try your hand at being an archivist?
In this free afternoon drop-in event (part of the Explore Your Archive campaign), you’ll learn about how we catalogue and preserve historical materials for the future. You’ll get to write your very own catalogue records for real vintage photographs from the Royal Mail Archive. And we’ll even add your work to our online catalogue for the world to see!
Our archivist Matt will give you a quick introduction to the whys, hows, and what on earths of archival cataloguing. Then you’ll get to choose from a huge array of photos dating from the 1920s to the 1960s. Using a guided Internet form on our computers, you’ll create a catalogue record for your chosen photo that meets the international standard for archival description. We’ll publish all your descriptions in our online catalogue the following day.
We’ve got photos from up and down the country. We’ve got post office interiors and exteriors, postmen on delivery in times gone by, and weird and wonderful sorting machines. We’ve even got photos of Mail Rail from when it first opened. Matt will have over 200 different photographic prints on display for you to look at and work with.
You don’t need any historical knowledge to join in. We’ll give you all the information you need, and we’ll check your work before it goes live. And if you just want to watch other people having a go, and look at some wonderful old photos while you’re here, you’re very welcome too!
This event will run between 13.00 and 16.00. Please do drop in for as long as you like! IT resources in the Discovery Room mean that a maximum of five people can do cataloguing work at any time. You’re very welcome to catalogue as many photographs as you want, but if a queue forms we may ask you to vacate your seat to give as many people as possible an opportunity to take part. We will proof-read your work and may make corrections and/or additions before publication. Any catalogue descriptions you write will become the intellectual property of the Postal Heritage Trust.
Time: Drop in between 13.00-16.00
